W1 MORPHOLOGY PT 3 Flashcards
What is the normal marrow cellularity of an adult?
must be between 40 & 60% on adults
What is marrow cellularity?
Proportion of haemapoietic cells in the bone marrow compared to other components making the bone marrow such as fat cells (adipocytes) and stromal cells
Describe the marrow cellularity of children?
It is hypercellular. There are more hemapoietic cells in the marrow than other components making up the marrow eg fat cells and stromal cells
Describe marrow cellularity of adults
It is hypocellular. There are less hemapoietic cells, and more of other components making up the marrow.
What is the use of iron stain?
To access presence of Fe within cells/tissue. The stain is used to diagnose iron deficiency anaemia and other hematological disoders
What are the features showing that an iron stain was used?
-Firstly, iron stain is used on marrow aspirates
- The stain will show iron stores blue on macrophages.
*Iron stores are reserves of iron on macrophages
What does increased iron stores entail, and what does reduced iron stores entail?
-Increased iron stores- Indicate iron overload
-Decreased iron stroes- Iron deficiency anaemia
A tumour growing around a bone spicule
Lymphoma infiltrate
*This where importance of trephines comes in. In aspirates you cannot see the tumours. U’ll misdiagnose them
