Boils (furuncle, carbuncle)
Infection of sebaceous glands or hair follicle with Staph. Painful. Does not penetrate into subcutaneous layer.
Single: Furuncle
Grouped: Carbuncle
Massage locally CI.
If fever…send client home!
Boils vs Acne
Boils–aggressive bacterial infection
Acne–locally clogged pore from oil or dead skin
Cellulitis
Infection of dermis AND subcutaneous tissue with STREP.
Enters through broken skin (ie insect bite or scratch).
Bright red, painful, swollen, hot, shiny.
Well defined borders.
Possible fever, chills, flu-like
Very contagious. Send to ER. Can lead to sepsis.
Fungal Infection
Fungus feeding on dead keratinized skin.
White scaling edges with central clearing.
“Ringworm” appearance.
Ex: athlete’s foot
Tinea. Capitus, corporis, cruris, pedis, unguium.
Herpes Simplex
Cold Sores
Mouth and groin area
Infection w Herpes simplex virus. Virus lives in nerve root. Recurs during times of illness/stress
Prodromal tingling, itching, burning.
Locally CI
Herpes Zoster (Shingles)
Eruption on skin across particular dermatome from previous chicken pox infection. Painful. Happens during decreased immune diligence.
Impetigo
Bacterial infection of superficial skin w Staph or Strep. Honeycomb crust appearance. On face.
Extremely contagious
CI for massage
Burn sheets if client contact
Lice and Mites
Little critters that feed on blood.
Itchy skin where there is hair.
CI for massage
Highly communicable
Isolate sheets and clean on HOT.
Warts
Viral. Infection of keratinized skin w HPV.
Mildly contagious
Acne
Inflammation of the sebaceous glands.
Comedones (keratin plugs). Open=”black head” oxidized; closed=”white head”
Mild bacteria that feeds on dead skin cells
Possible hormone imbalance, diet.
Eczema
Superficial inflammation of the skin. Dry and scaly, red. Lichenification.
Hives
Inflammatory skin response. Regulated by histamine.
Burns
From hyperthermia and UV exposure.
Decubitus Ulcers
Bedsores.
Ischemia due to extended pressure from lying in one position.
Can become infected.
May be a sign of neglect or abuse in elders or invalids.
Scar Tissue
Hypertrophic Scars
Keloid Scars
Contracture Scars
