Midterm Study Guide Flashcards
What muscles are involved in torticollis?
Torticollis: spasm of cervical muscles on one side, causing turning or tipping of the head.
SCM, Trapezius, Scalenes
Fibromyalgia
-Generalized chronic muscle, tendon, ligament, and other soft tissue pain, with no organic cause.
-Sleep is always disturbed
-Low stamina
-Stiffness after rest
-Sensitivity to cold, and low pain tolerance
-Difficult to diagnose–>stigmatized as malingerers
->3 months
-Mostly affects women
-Depression
Difficult to treat: combo nutrition, sleep, gentle exercise, stretching, massage, antidepressants.
Factors contributing to muscle soreness
Lactic acid
Calcium leakage
Microscopic tears
(Activity level
Age
Diet)
Massage can: move fresh oxygenated blood to sore area, while flushing out old, stagnant interstitial fluid.
Acute/sub-acute injuries: know time-frames and Tx considerations
Acute: 0-48 hours. CI for massage. PRICE
Subacute: A few days to weeks. Locally CI. Gentle PROM and contrast ice/heat
Chronic: Longer than 3 months. Ice. Massage
Wolfe’s Law + How it Affects Healing
Form follows function for bones.
The function of a bone dictates is architecture and external structure.
Davis’ Law and how it affects healing
Form follows function for soft tissues.
Soft tissue grows according to the stress put on it.
Pain: physiological effects
Somatization: mental health classification. Presence of physical pain without organic cause.
Pain: psychological effects
Fear, Depression and anxiety
Lack of sleep
Changes to a person’s identity
How does an LMT assess for pain? (pg 23?)
- SOAP
Subjective. LOPQRST
Objective
Application
Progress - Observe how client holds their body. Protective position?
- Palpitate areas of pain. If pain ^, suggests acute inflammation, triger point, or trauma.
Know LOPQRST + give examples for each
Location (My neck)
Onset (two days ago, when my toddler jumped on me)
Palliative/Provocative (Ice makes it better, heat makes it worse)
Quality (Stabbing)
Refer/Radiate (Like if pain also ran down my arm)
Severity (scale 1-10)
Time (Just it the morning)
Boils vs Acne
Boil - Furuncle and Carbuncle. Does not go to subcutaneous layer. Bacterial Staph. Infection of sebaceous gland. VERY CONTAGEOUS
Acne - buildup/infection of sebaceous gland with oil/dead skin cells. NOT CONTAGEOUS
Both are localized infections of sebaceous glands. One is very contagious.
Impetigo
Staph or Strep.
Children
Honey colored crust
Burn your sheets
Highly communicable
Totally CI
Psoriasis: Acute vs sub-acute flare up
Immune system disorder
An autoimmune disorder with scaly plaques over skin.
Rapid turnover of skin cells.
Texdtbook doesnt address acute vs sub-acute flare ups. Does say flare ups can be triggered by environmental factors and stress, like smoking, dry cold weather, alcohol, vit D deficiency, and skin injuries.
Massage is indicated if there are no acute lesions or broken skin. Ask client if it is ok to touch. Can be itchy or painful
Eczema
A type of dermatitis; overproduction of histamines.
Skin disorder
Local dermatitis due to environmental, dietary, or genetic cause
Low Back Pain
From MUSCLE IMBALANCES which create mechanical problems with the skeleton, building up pressure at points along the spine.
Massage is very indicated, unless during an acute stage. Heat is recommended
Imbalances could be from:
physiological
Disc herniation
Disc degeneration
Osteoarthritis
Spinal stenosis (narrowing)
