A

-Generalized chronic muscle, tendon, ligament, and other soft tissue pain, with no organic cause.
-Sleep is always disturbed
-Low stamina
-Stiffness after rest
-Sensitivity to cold, and low pain tolerance
-Difficult to diagnose–>stigmatized as malingerers
->3 months
-Mostly affects women
-Depression

Difficult to treat: combo nutrition, sleep, gentle exercise, stretching, massage, antidepressants.

Q

How does an LMT assess for pain? (pg 23?)

A
  1. SOAP
    Subjective. LOPQRST
    Objective
    Application
    Progress
  2. Observe how client holds their body. Protective position?
  3. Palpitate areas of pain. If pain ^, suggests acute inflammation, triger point, or trauma.

Q

Know LOPQRST + give examples for each

A

Location (My neck)
Onset (two days ago, when my toddler jumped on me)
Palliative/Provocative (Ice makes it better, heat makes it worse)
Quality (Stabbing)
Refer/Radiate (Like if pain also ran down my arm)
Severity (scale 1-10)
Time (Just it the morning)

Q

Boils vs Acne

A

Boil - Furuncle and Carbuncle. Does not go to subcutaneous layer. Bacterial Staph. Infection of sebaceous gland. VERY CONTAGEOUS

Acne - buildup/infection of sebaceous gland with oil/dead skin cells. NOT CONTAGEOUS

Both are localized infections of sebaceous glands. One is very contagious.

Q

Psoriasis: Acute vs sub-acute flare up

A

Immune system disorder
An autoimmune disorder with scaly plaques over skin.
Rapid turnover of skin cells.

Texdtbook doesnt address acute vs sub-acute flare ups. Does say flare ups can be triggered by environmental factors and stress, like smoking, dry cold weather, alcohol, vit D deficiency, and skin injuries.

Massage is indicated if there are no acute lesions or broken skin. Ask client if it is ok to touch. Can be itchy or painful

Q

Low Back Pain

A

From MUSCLE IMBALANCES which create mechanical problems with the skeleton, building up pressure at points along the spine.
Massage is very indicated, unless during an acute stage. Heat is recommended

Imbalances could be from:
physiological
Disc herniation
Disc degeneration
Osteoarthritis
Spinal stenosis (narrowing)

Q

Strain

A

Strain - Tendon injury. Often from chronic overuse and poor scar tissue healing from previous injury.
Massage is very helpful. Cross fiber friction and myofascial release and passive lengthening (reciprocal inhibition)

17
Q

Six General Effects of Massage

A

1 Increased ROM
2 Increased circulation
3 Accelerated healing
4. Decreased perception of pain
5. Decreased depression
6. Decreased muscle spasm

18
Q

Sub-acute shoulder injury: 4 considerations and possible treatment techniques

A
19
Q

Warts

A

HPV infection of keratinized skin. Soft and painless

20
Q

A

Swelling
Heat
A loss of function
Redness
Pain

21
Q

Spasm vs Cramps

A

Involuntary muscle contractions

Cramps-Shorter and stronger
Spasms-longer and lower grade

22
Q

Acne vs Psoriasis

A

Psoriasis–autoimmune disorder. Excessive production of skin cells
Acne–sebaceous clog w possible infection

23
Q

Herpes Simplex vs Herpes Zoster

A

Zoster–chickenpox + shingles
Simplex–cold sores

24
Q

Immune deficient

A

The immune system isnt functioning fully

25
Q

Autoimmune

A

Relating to a disease.
Antibodies are produced against a substance naturally present in the body.

26
Q

Homeostatis

A

Balance in the body

27
Q

Hypothalamus

A

Endocrine gland in the brain
Controls body temp, heart rate, hunger, mood, etc.

28
Q

Idiopathic

A

We dont know the cause of why a particular pathology has developed.

29
Q

“-itis”

A

“inflammation”

30
Q

Etiology

A

Cause of a disease or condition

31
Q

Edema

A

Swelling from trapped fluid.

32
Q

SOAP

A

Subjective – What the client tells you
Objective - What you observe
Application - What you did during the massage
Progress - How the massage went. Plan of continued care

A

Muscular
Connective
Bone

36
Q

PRODOME

A

“Pre-symptom”
Herpes simplex

37
Q

When can you work on someone with a contagious disorder and WHY you could.

A

Like…herpes simplex. Its CI locally, in an area I wouldnt be touching anyway.
