A
Opacification of blood vessels using the injection of iodine-based contrast medium

Angiography process
A
- Contrast is introduced into a proximal artery
- rapid sequence of images required
- may need to remain in the hospital overnight because of the arterial cannulation (minimum lay flat for 6 hours)

Subtraction Angiography
A
Take everything in the picture away and only keep the blood flow - visualise blood flow only

Angiography Indications
A
To demonstrate acute or chronic disorders of the blood vessels
- atherosclerotic disease
- ischaemic disease
- dissection
- traumatic rupture
- chronic occlusions
- stenosis
- thrombus

Angiography contradictions
A
- pregnancy
- allergy to contrast
- contrast - renal impairment
- contrast - unstable patient
- inability to lie flat
- recent barium procedure

Angiography +ve
A
- Allows for selective catheterisation of specific blood vessels for improved assessment
- Therapeutic procedures may be performed immediately following a diagnostic angiogram
