week 10 - metabolic bone disease Flashcards
generalised osteopenia
decreased bone density or increased radiolucency of done
- OP occurs when bone reabsorption exceeds bone formation
- leads to deective bone quality and strenght
Osteoprosis
amount of bone present per unit of volume is reduced but the composition is normal
- characterised by progressive loss of bone mass, due to increased resorption as well as decreased bone production
osteoprosis radiographic features
prominent primary trabeculations
thinning of the cortices
tunneling
regional osteoporosis
affected 1 extremity
osteomalacia
“softness of bone” - disorder with excessive amounts of uncalcified osteoid
- radiogrpahic features non-specific, consisting primarily of osteopenia
hperparathyroidism
increased levels of parathyroid hormone which indirectly leads to increased osteoclastic activity and removal of calcium from bone that enters the blood
Rickets
disease of growing bone that is unique to children and adolescents - failure of osteoid to calcify in a growing person
acromegaly
osteoblast proliferation is regulated by HG and insulin like growth factor type I
osteogenesis imperfecta
hetergeneous group of inherited disorders characterised by an involvement of bones and extraskeletal tissues
paget disease
- second most common aging bone disorder, excessive and abnormal remodeling of bone
