Q

What are the two types of fractures

A
  • Closed or simple fracture – the surrounding skin remains intact
  • Open or compound fracture – there is a disruption to the skin integrity (portal of entry for bacteria) (Brown, 2017)

Q

What are the types of compartment syndrome

A
  • Decreased compartment size – restrictive cast, bandaging
  • Increased compartment content - bleeding into these compartments
  • Abnormal increased pressure is exerted on blood vessels and nerves in compartment syndrome

Q

What are the 5 p signs and symptoms of Compartment syndrome

A

➢ Pain
➢ Pallor and delayed capillary refill
➢ Pulses (may be normal, decreased or absent in distal extremity)
➢ Paresthesia (loss of sensation or tingling)
➢ Paralysis (late finding)
