Week 14 Flashcards
What are Erythrocytes
Contain Haemoglobin
iron rich protein that carries O2
What are Erythropoiesis -
Erythropoietin is a hormone produced in the kidneys (remember the renal module) and is key for effective erythropoiesis. Normal erythropoiesis results in the production of red blood cell formation.
What is Haemolysis -
the increased destruction red blood cells resulting in an overall reduction in red cell numbers.
What are Leukocytes -
Known as white cells.
What are Neutrophils -
are the most abundant leukocytes in the body. Neutrophils travel to sites of infection and inflammation and ingest (phagocytes) kill and break down bacteria.
What are Eosinophils-
are involved in allergic reactions as well as being responsible for killing and ingesting parasites
What are Basophils -
have a role in allergic and inflammatory responses
What is Neutropenia -
The total number of neutrophils in the blood is low
Neutropenia is currently defined as a neutrophil count less than 2.0 x 109/L.
What is Thrombocytopenia -
referred to as low levels on platelets in the blood.
Provide a brief description of thrombocytopenia
A low platelet count that leads to clotting problems (haemostasis).
Normal Haemoglobin concentration
(normal female range 12 - 17.5 g/dL)
Normal WBC count
(normal range 4.9 - 11 x 109/L)
Normal absolute neutrophil count
(normal = 2 - 7.5 x 109/L)
Normal platelet count
(normal range 150 - 400 x 109/L)
