Manipulating Temporal Frequency
event occurs only once but is repeated in the plot
-we see the same event twice
Parallelism
allows film to become more complex
Temporal Frequency
Know the actual frequency with which they occurred.
Temporal Order
We want to order events chronologically.
Temporal Duration
Assign some actual duration to the events we see.
1. Screen duration: time it takes to view the film
2. Plot duration: The duration of events actually portrayed in film
3. Story duration: duration of all story events including the ones inferred.
Development Sections
cause and effect creates pattern of development
Diegetic Sound
originate from sources within the film world- tv, radio, internet.
Non-Digetic Sound
characters in film cannot hear it
Diegesis
the total world of the story action
Openings Medias Res
-provides a basis for what is to come and initiates us into the narrative
-Latin phrase meaning in the middle of things
Climaxes and Closings
climax aims to lift the viewer to a high degree of tension
Unrestricted Narration
We aren’t restricted to Dorothy’s range of knowledge (we know more than she does)
Restricted narration
Our range of knowledge is restricted to what she knows
Objective Narration
viewers see Toto escape but was not witnessed by any observer in the film.
Subjective Narration
Louise seeing the Heptapods for the first time.
