Film style
-The repeated and salient uses of film techniques characteristics of a single film or a group of films (example: a filmmakers work or a national movement)

Analyzing Film Style
- Determine the organizational structure of the film, its formal style
2.Identify the salient techniques used. - Trace out patterns of techniques within the whole film
4.Propose functions for the salient techniques and the patterns they form.
German Expressionism
-The true essence of things emerges (is expressed) into visible form
-Psychological, emotional, or moral states revealed via distorted settings
Themes of German Expressionism
madness, revolt, sexuality- the unconscious
-Extreme stylization in mise-en-scene.
-Distorted, exaggerated shapes and shadows.
-Chiaroscuro lighting
-Heavy gothic makeup
-Unnatural figure movements
F.W. Murnau & Expressive Cinematography
-Murnau viewed Caligirl as both an inspiration and a dead end
-Expressive mise-en-scene= theatrical
-Expressive cinematography= cinematic
Political and Economic Context
-Weimar Republic (1919-1933)
-German economic crisis
-Cheap German exports, including films
-Imports prohibitively expensive
-Early films (lime Caligirl) inexpensive and popular in Germany, France, and USA
-Later films (like Metropolis) became too costly to produce
-Competition from Hollywood imports from 1924
German Expressionism and Hollywood
-Influx of German and Austrian filmmakers into Hollywood
-Fritz lang, Billy Wilder, Otto Preminger, Josef van Sternberg.
