Ideal types and Typologies
Describe what something is in the general or abstract
Regimes
The “whole picture” of a political system in a country
Pluralism
a system that encourages the creation of multiple states, groups, etc.
Leadership
Who governs a certain body of individuals
Ideology
a system of ideals that determines ones beliefs
Democracy
A system of government determined by free and fair elections, a degree of liberalism and civil rights, and certain belief and attitude systems
Totalitarianism
A regime that has no pluralism, ideology surrounding a ‘utopia’, mobilizes its followers through political celebrations, and has a charismatic leader
Personalism
A regime that has no political pluralism, the ideology centers around the ‘cult of personality’, mobilization that is low but glorifies the ruler, and a personalistic leadership
Authoritarian
A regime that has more pluralism than other non democratic regimes, no ideology, no mobilization, and slightly more space for leadership
Competitive Authoritarianism
A regime that has more pluralism than a classic authoritarian regime with some debate in legislative and a somewhat free jury (although both are still heavily controlled by a dominant party)
