Week 12: Human impacts Flashcards
Climate change definition
A change in the statistical properties of the climate system over extended periods of time, regardless of cause
Climate fluctuations definition
Changes in climate system over periods shorter than a few decades, e.g El Nino
Climate change occcurs due to
Natural processes
Examples of natural processes that cause climate change
Volcanism, plate tectonics, anthropogenic impacts
Anthropogenic climate change examples
Global warming, ocean acidification, sea-level rise
Necessary for habitable planet, otherwise mean surface temperature = -18 degrees
Greenhouse gases
Examples of Greenhouse gases
Carbon dioxide, water, methane
The greenhouse effect explained
- Suns radiation travels toward the earth
- About half is reflected or absorbed by clouds and the atmosphere
- The rest reaches the earth, where it is absorbed by oceans and land
- The earth also releases heat back toward space
- Some of this heat passes directly through the atmosphere
- But most of it is retained by greenhouse gases
Relatively stable rate of emissions of GHGs up until
Industrial revolution (1760-1840)
Safe levels of ppm CO2 in planets thermostat
350 ppm
Current world ppm CO2 of planets thermostat
422 ppm
As CO2 concentration in the atmosphere increases what also increases
Temperature
Ocean absorbs what percentage of heat
85%
Albedo is
The fraction of light that a surface reflects
Highest albedo reflection
Snow (85% reflected)
Lowest albedo reflection
Water (7% reflected)
Loss of albedo driven feedback loop
- Albedo reduced
- Increased absorption
- Increase in temperature
- Snow and ice melts
- Darker surfaces are revealed
- Repeat
Sea level rise largely driven by
Thermal expansion of seawater
All animals have a thermal _____ and a thermal _____
Optima, Maxima
Exceeding a thermal maxima leads to
Losses in fitness
Which species more tolerant to thermal changes
Temperate species
Increased CO2 in the ocean equals
Intenser ocean acidification
As ocean acidification intensifies, seawater PH is
Lowered
Ocean acidification effects calcifiers. For calcifiers to grow, the level of calcium carbonate saturation in SW must be over
Three
