What is the DSM criteria for anorexia and nervosa?
A. restriction of calories relative to requirements, leading to a significantly low body weight
b. intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat

wt loss through dieting, fasting or excessive exercise

at safe weight but still has distortions

What are comorbidities of anorexia nervosa?
depression, anxiety, OCD, substance use disorder, bulimia nervosa (can’t be dx at same time)
Which disorder has the highest death rate than any major mental disorder?
anorexia nervosa
What is the DSM criteria for bulimia nervosa?
A. Recurrent episodes of binge eating with BOTH
-eating in discrete period of time (large amount of food)
-lack of control
B. Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors
C. binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors both occur on average —at least 1/wk for 3 mo—
D. self evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and wt
E. does not occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia nervosa
What are the specifiers for bulimia nervosa?
Remission - partial or full
Severity - mild, moderate, severe, extreme
What are the medical consequences of bulimia nervosa?
electrolyte imbalance, heart abnormalities, dental problems
What are the comorbidities of bulimia nervosa?
depression, social anxiety disorder, substance use disorder, borderline personality disorder, anorexia nervosa
What is the main difference btw bulimia and anorexia?
bulimia does not have wt component
bulimia do not have body dysmorphia
What is the DSM 5 criteria for binge eating disorder?
A. recurrent episode of binge eating
-eating in discrete period of time
-lack of control
B. binge eating episode are associated with >3 sxs
C. marked distress
D. at least 1/wk for 3 mo
E. NOT associated with recurrent use of inappropriate compensatory behavior
What is the severity of bulimia based on?
how much per wk they binge and purge
What is the treatment for anorexia nervosa?
hospitalization - controlled wt gain and restore wt to level that is not life threatening
Partial hospitalization and outpt treatments
Individual therapy - supportive therapy, CBT, IPT
Family therapy
Meds - not really helpful but good for comorbidities
What are the sxs of binge eating?
each much more rapidly than normal
eating until feeling uncomforatble
eating large amounts of food when not physically hungry
eating alone because embarrassed by how much one is eating
feeling disgusted with oneself
What is the treatment for bulimia nervosa?
CBT
Meds - HELPFUL - SSRA, TCA
What is the most common eating disorder in the US?
binge eating disorders

IPT, CBT

- do you make yourself SICK because you feel uncomfortably full?
- do you worry that you have lost CONTROL over how much you eat?
- have you recently lost more than ONE stone (14 lb) in 3 months?
- do you think you are too FAT, even though others say you are too thin?
- would you say that FOOD dominates your life?
What is the treatment for anorexia nervosa?
hospitalization - controlled wt gain and restore wt to level that is not life threatening
Partial hospitalization and outpt treatments
Individual therapy - supportive therapy, CBT, IPT

highest mortality, treatment outcomes are mostly poor
What is the treatment for bulimia nervosa?

intermittent course or chronic course, can have full recovery
