Week 11 - Blood Supply & Ventricular System of CNS Flashcards
What are the components of the Internal Carotid Artery and what segments are within those?
- Cervical part -> (C1)
- Petrous part (petrous component of temporal bone) -> (C2)
- Cavernous part (cavernous sinus -> does 180 degree turn) -> (C3-C5)
- Cerebral part -> (C6-C7)
More specifically about the segments of the Internal Carotid artery?
C1 - C7
What are the 5 most important branches of the Internal Carotid?
- Ophthalmic artery
- Posterior communicating
- Anterior Choroidal
- Anterior Cerebral
- Middle Cerebral
What are the branches from the Cervical part (C1) of the internal carotid? and what does it supply?
No branches
What are the branches of the Petrous part (C2) of the internal carotid? and what does it supply?
Cartoicotympanic
Middle ear
What are the branches of the Lacerum part (C3) of the internal carotid? and what does it supply?
No branches
What are the branches of the Cavernous part (C4) of the internal carotid? and what does it supply?
Meningohypophyseal trunk
Inferolateral trunk
Pituitary stalk and glands
Meninges
What are the branches of the Clinoid part (C5) of the internal carotid? and what does it supply?
No branches
What are the branches of the Ophthalmic part (C6) of the internal carotid? and what does it supply?
Ophthalmic artery
Superior hypophyseal
Retina orbit superior scalp
Pituitary stalk of pituitary gland (anterior gland)
What are the branches of the Communicating part (C7) of the internal carotid? and what does it supply?
Posterior communicating
Anterior choroidal
Anterior cerebral
Middle cerebral
Optic chiasm, Optic tract, Hypothalamus and thalamus, Deep brain structures, choroid plexus cortex, medial frontal lobe, cingulate cortex, lateral frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe
Whats a good way of remembering if each part of internal carotid gives rise to branches?
All the even sections give rise to an artery at least
All the odd sections don’t apart from C7 Communicating
Branches of Internal carotid visualised
What arteries do Vertebral arteries arise from?
Subclavian artery
What is the circle of Willis?
Connects the carotid and vertebral networks
Label the arteries
Draw the path of the Anterior Cerebral Artery and what are the parts of it as well as the branches it gives rise to?
What does Anterior Cerebral Artery supply?
medial aspects of frontal and parietal lobe and lateral aspect of frontal w its branches
What are potential effects of having a stroke or haemorrhage of anterior cerebral artery?
expect to see lower limb deficits bc anterior cerebral supplies parts of the brain required for lower limb
Draw the path of the Middle Cerebral Artery and what are the parts of it as well as the branches it gives rise to?
What does Middle Cerebral Artery supply?
Lateral aspect of Cerebral hemisphere
Draw the path of the Posterior Cerebral Artery and what are the parts of it as well as the branches it gives rise to?
What does Posterior Cerebral Artery supply?
Medial aspect and underside of temporal and occipital lobe
+ thalamus with deeper perforated branches
How is the basal nuclei and thalamus supplied?
Thalamus is largely supplied by posterior cerebral
Basal nuclei supplied largely by anterior vessels
Visualisation of arterial supply of brain
What is the blood supply of the cerebellum?
- Sup Cerebellar artery
- Ant inf cerebellar artery
- Post inf cerebellar artery
What is the blood supply of the brain stem?
