Week 10 - Cranial Nerve Nuclei & Visual Pathway Flashcards
Where are the general positions of the neurons in the spinal cord
Dorsal side -> Sensory neurons
Ventral side - Motor neurons
What comes from the Alar and Basal plate?
Alar Plate -> Sensory neurons
Basal Plate -> Motor neurons
Cranial vs Spinal nerve
Top - Spinal
Bottom - Cranial
What does the diagram show?
- Nuclei of cranial nerves
- Position shown is where they exit from brain stem
Neurons in the Brainstem diagram
In this, where would you find motor and sensory nuclei
middle part - motor
lateral - sensory
Organisation of CN nuclei diagram
What are the functions of the Oculomotor nerve? CNIII an CNIV
- innervate extraocular eye muscles
- transmits parasymp fibres to ciliary ganglion from midbrain
On the diagram -> middle ones at the top
What are CNIII and CNIV and what nuclei does it contain?
Both part of Oculomotor Nerve
CNIII -> Edinger Westphal nucleus (parasymp preganglionic) & Oculomotor nucleus (somatic motor)
for eye
CNIV -> Trochlear nucleus (somatic motor of eye)
Where does the Trigeminal nerve emerge?
most rostral (superior) nerve to emerge from the pons
What is CNV and what nuclei does it contain?
Trigeminal Nerve
- Trigeminal motor nucleus (branchial motor)
- Spinal, main sensory, and somatic sensory (mesencephalic nuclei)
Where does the Abducens nerve emerge?
What is CNVI and what nuclei does it contain?
Abducens nerve
- Abducens nuclei (somatic motor)
Ab on diagram
What is CNVII and what nuclei does it contain?
Facial Nerve
- Facial nucleus (branchial motor)
- Superior salivary nucleus (preganglionic parasymp)
- Nucleus of solitary tract (visceral sensory for taste)
Fa, Sa, and Sol on diagram
What is CNVIII? and what nuclei does it contain?
Vestibulocochlear nerve
- Vestibular and cochlear nerve
