week 10 - neuro (histology) Flashcards
What is the epineurium?
The connective tissue around a whole nerve
What is the perineurium?
The connective tissue around a fascicle/group of neurons
What is the endoneurium?
The connective tissue that wraps a specific neuron
What is an axon terminal?
The end of a neuron where the synapses are
Where are multipolar neurons found?
In the CNS
What are multipolar neurons?
Neurons with one axon and a cell body with multiple dendrites
Where are bipolar neurons found?
In specific sensory systems
What are bipolar neurons?
Neurons with one axon and a single dendritic tree
Where are unipolar neurons found?
In the PNS only
What are unipolar neurons?
Neurons with one axon
What are glial cells?
The supporter cells for the neurons and the nervous system
Name some glial cells
CNS: oligodendrocytes, microglia, astrocytes, ependymal cells
PNS: schwann cells, satellite cells
What are the functions of astrocytes?
Help maintain the BBB and provide neurons with nutrients, recycle neurotransmitters,
What are the histological features of astrocytes?
Large, ovoid, light nuclei
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
Make myelin in CNS
What are the histological features of oligodendrocytes?
Near neurons, small, dark nuclei
