Week 1 Flashcards
What is steady state?
The balance between demands placed on the body & the Physiological response to those demands
Name two instances where a steady state may not be possible to reach
Very intense exercise
Prolonged exercise in hot/humid environment
Define adaptation
A change in the structure and function of a cell or organ system, that improves its ability to maintain homeostasis
Define acclimation
Adaptation under extreme environmental conditions
Define work
The product of force and distance through which that force acts
Define power
Describes how much work is accomplished per unit of time
Formula for work
W = F x D
Formula for Power
P = Work/ Time
What is Ergometry
The measurement of work output
3 things influencing exercise efficiency
- Work rate
- Speed of movement
- Fibre composition
Define efficiency (exercise)
Rate at which work is done relative to rate at which energy is expended
What is direct calorimetry?
Measurement of heat production as indicator of metabolic rate
What is indirect calorimetry ?
Measurement of O2 consumption as indicator of metabolic rate
