Week 1 Flashcards
What is Intelligence?
Intelligence cannot be measured but it can be culturally defined and multifaceted (you can excel in one domain but not another.)
Spearman’s Two Factory Theory
Used factor analysis to look at correlation between performance.
General intelligence (maths, vocabulary, general knowledge). Specific intelligence (specific abilities and interpersonal differences).
7 Primary Mental Abilities
- Verbal comprehension
- Verbal fluency
- Numerical ability
- Spatial ability
- Memory
- Perceptual speed
- Reasoning
Information Processing Approach
- Speed of processing (correlated to IQ, tets mental quickness).
- Knowledge base (amount of knowledge and how easy it is to retrieve).
- Ability to acquire and apply cognitive strategies (measure of intelligence and use strategies to help solve tasks).
Triarchic Theory of Intelligence
- Analytic intelligence (reaosning and evaluation).
- Creative inteligence (generate new ideas).
- Practical intelligence (ability to tackle everyday problems).
Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale
- Arithmic and reasoning skills.
- Used IQ instead of mental age.
- Used for people aged 2-85
Yerkes Army Testing
- Army alpha (following oral directions, maths, judgements and analogies)
- Army beta (visual percpeion and motor tests, group tests, pictures)
Wechsler Army Testing
- Verbal (information, similarities, maths, vocabulary)
- Performance (picture completion and arrangement, block design)
Wechsler Intelligence Scales
- Wechsler adult intelligence scale WAIS
- Wechsler intelligence scale for children WISC
- Wechsler primary and preschool scale of intelligence WPPSI
Nature vs Nurture
- Nature (biological processes).
- Nurture (environment)
Linguistic Intelligence
Language and words (writers, teachers)
Logical mathematical intelligence
Patterns, problem solving (architect, meterologist)
Spatial Intelligence
Think in images (tradies, driver)
Musical Intelligence
Reocgnise melody, pitch and rhythm (conductor, musician)
Bodily Kinaesthetic Intelligence
Use ones body skillfully (athlete, neurosurgeon)
