Q

What is solution (Chemical weathering)?

A

The carbonic acid in rainwater reacts with rocks like limestone and slowly dissolves them. Dissolved rock then gets washed away

Q

What is hydrolysis (Chemical weathering)?

A

Hydrogen in rainwater reacts with minerals in rocks but combines with them

Q

What is hydration (Chemical weathering)?

A

Certain rocks absorb water in their structure causing them to get bigger

Q

What is freeze-thaw (Physical weathering)?

A

The water inside cracks freeze and expand placing pressure on the rock. This repeats and it cracks

Q

What is exfoliation (Physical weathering)?

A

Rock heats up and expands in the day and cools down and contracts at night. This weakens the layers of the rock causing it to peel

Q

What is pressure release (Physical weathering)?

A

The removal of pressure allows the rock to expand causing them to fracture

Q

What is salt crystal growth (Physical weathering)?

A

Water is evaporated leaving salt crystals. The salt attacks rocks chemically or places pressure on structure

16
Q

What factors affect the rate of weathering?

A

Geology, vegetation, climate, relief, humans

17
Q

Why is weathering more rapid in tropical areas?

A

More rainfall and vegetation
Higher temperature differences
Faster rates of chemical reactions

18
Q

How is a limestone pavement formed?

A

Rainwater causes solution and freeze thaw weathering

19
Q

How are karsts formed?

A

Some weaker areas are completely weathered leaving stronger sections remaining

20
Q

How are stalagmites/stalactites formed?

A

Created by water which have a large amount on calcium in them. The dissolved water leaves calcium which builds up over time
