Weather 4: Planning & Resources Flashcards
Flight Visibility
Ability to see and indentify prominent unlighted objects by day and prominent lighted objects by night from the cockpit
Prevailing Visibility
The greatest horizontal visibility throughout at least half of the horizon circle
Slant Range Visibility
Distance on final approach when the runway environment is in sight
Runway Visual Range
Horizontal distance looking down the runway
In feet or meters
What defines a ceiling?
The lowest broken or overcast cloud layer
What does a surface analysis chart show?
Is a depiction of observed weather history (not a forecast)
Shows:
* Pressure centers
* Isobars
* Fronts
What does a prognostic chart show?
Is a forecast of future weather
Shows:
* Fronts
* Pressure centers
* Isobars
* Precipitation
What is the difference between a METAR and a TAF?
METAR:
* An hourly scheduled observation of current weather conditions
* Determines criteria for takeoff and landing
TAF:
* Gives at least a 24hr forecast (issued every 6 hours)
* Determines the destination weather
What can a NEXRAD RADAR show?
- Hail
- Tornadoes
- Microburts
- Low level wind shear
“HTML”
What are Winds Aloft charts used for?
Finding the best headwind/tailwind components and what altitudes to fly to use them to your advantage
What is a PIREP?
A voice report given to ATC while airborne to advise other aviators of potential hazards
What are the required reporting conditions for a PIREP?
PIREPs are required to be reports when:
* Requested by ATC
* Unusual/unforeseen weather conditions are encountered
* Weather conditions on an IFR approach differ from the latest observation
* A missed approach is executed
* Wind shear is encountered
What are the conditions for a Servere Weather Watch (WW)?
- Hail that is greater than 1inch in diameter
- Very strong winds
What are the conditions associated with a Convective SIGMET?
Severe convective activity:
* Severe turbulence
* Severe Icing
* Low level wind shear
Hail greater than 3/4inch in diameter
Tornadoes
A line of thunderstorms
What are the conditions associated with a Non-Convective SIGMET?
Weather Hazards that are not related to thunderstorms
- Severe icing (that is not due to a thunderstorm)
- Severe or Extreme turbulence (that is not due to a thunderstorm)
- Dust/sandstorms that lower visibility to less than 3SM
- Volcanic Ash
