A

Shaving

34
Q

Which hair removal method is when a chemical substance is spread on the skin to dissolve the hair at the surface of the skin and below the stratum corneum?

A

Chemical Depilatory

35
Q

What is an ancient method of epilation that involves a cotton thread looped/twisted in the middle that quickly snags unwanted hairs in the twisted portion of the thread? (Hint: also known as Banding)

A

Threading

36
Q

Which alternative hair removal method is made for sensitive skin that involves water, sugar, and lemon mixed into a ball of wax?

A

Sugaring

37
Q

Which hair removal method uses a spatula to apply product onto the skin and direction of hair growth and is removed using flexible strips?

A

Spatula Applied Sugaring

38
Q

A primary method that can be applied in a hard or soft form, made of beeswax and resin, that epilates the skin is called…

A

Waxing

39
Q

FUN FACT: Which hair removal method is the only FDA recognized method for PERMANENT hair removal?

A

Electrolysis

40
Q

Describe the 3 parts of Electrolysis

A

1) Thermolysis: an alternating current (AC) that destroys the dermal papilla
2) Galvanic Electrolysis: a direct current (DC) that creates a chemical reaction to decompose follicles
3) Blend: a combination of the Thermolysis and the Galvanic Electrolysis used together alternately or simultaneously

41
Q

Which hair removal method uses intense pulses of electromagnetic radiation that heat up skin pigment to destroy hair follicles? (Hint: dark hair and minimal skin pigment is the best for this method)

A

Laser Hair Removal

TIP: Permanent Hair Reduction

42
Q

SOFT WAX instructions
(Eyebrows, Lips, Arms, Legs, Chest, Back, Bikini/Brazilians)

A

1) Test soft wax on forearm for temp.
2) Cleanse area being waxed (prep). Do a patch test on client if necessary
3) Twirl wax and apply by small SECTIONS with the direction of hair growth
4) Apply muslin strip and SMOOTH IT out to make sure it’s stuck to wax
5) Rip muslin strip fast against hair growth using a punching motion CLOSE to taut skin. Do NOT rip upwards
6) Use muslin strip again if any wax residue is visible to strip it
7) Repeat for other sections
8) When done, apply wax residue oil, aloe cooling lotion, and hydrating lotion

43
Q

HARD WAX instructions
(Underarms, Nose, Bikinis/Brazilians, Chest, Back)

A

1) Test hard wax on forearm for temp.
2) Cleanse area being waxed (prep) EXCEPT for NOSE and EARS. Do a patch test on client if necessary
3) Twirl wax and apply in small sections TOWARD the hair growth and then AGAINST it in a Figure 8 pattern.
4) If using SMALL tongue depresser, that
will be your strip. If not, make a tab of wax on gloved hand and stick shiny side to shiny side together on wax to create tab
5) After wax has hardened, use tab or tongue depresser to rip wax AGAINST hair growth in a punching motion CLOSE to taut skin. Do NOT rip upwards
6) Repeat for other sections
7) When done, apply wax residue oil, aloe cooling lotion, and hydrating lotion EXCEPT for NOSE

44
Q

How long does it take for hair to grow back after waxing?

A

6 to 8 weeks

45
Q

Is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) caused by Hypertrichosis or Hirsutism?

A

Hirsutism. PCOS accounts for 3/4ths of ALL Hirsutism cases

46
Q

How long does hair have to be to wax and sugar?

A

COARSE or SHAVEN hair needs to be 1/2 of an inch while FINE or VIRGIN hair needs to be 1/4 of an inch long. Sugaring requires hair to be 1/16 inches long.

TIP: Hair should model size of a grain of rice

47
Q

FUN FACT: What thickness should hard wax resemble?

A

a Nickel

48
Q

Why should you not leave your wax pots on overnight to heat up your wax?

A

Overnight heating can reduce the wax’s effectiveness and cause injuries

49
Q

What consistency should soft wax resemble?

A

Honey-like consistency

TIP: Soft wax should NOT be runny like syrup

50
Q

____ is a technique that utilizes wax that has built up on a muslin strip to remove obvious hairs on the skin. (Hint: produces a gradual demarcation between completely hairless and some hair left)

A

Blending (also known as Feathering)

51
Q

Which technique uses quick application and removal of soft wax that saves time, increases profits, and makes clients feel more comfortable?

A

Speed Waxing

52
Q

Which wax distorts hair growth when removed?

A

Soft wax

TIP: Hard wax will NEVER distort hair growth when ever you remove it

53
Q

A client who takes TOPICAL prescriptions can be waxed. Identify the reason why.

A

Topicals are typically applied to one area of the skin. You can wax a client anywhere except the area the topical prescription was applied to.

TIP: Stick to HARD wax if client takes topical prescriptions

54
Q

Can a client get a facial wax during a facial service?

A

Yes, eyebrow or upper lip waxing SHOULD be done AFTER cleansing, gentle exfoliation, steam, and extractions but BEFORE the mask

TIP: NO AGGRESSIVE exfoliation before waxing. Will irritate skin

55
Q

Following a wax service, what elements should clients avoid to ensure skin does not have adverse effects?

A

Sun exposure, tanning, fragranced creams, exfoliation, and excessive heat

56
Q

List out various contraindications for waxing

A

Leg waxing should not be performed on clients who have varicose veins.

Body waxing should not be performed on clients with phlebitis, skin disorders, epilepsy, diabetes, hemophilia, or other contraindicated medical conditions.

Facial waxing should not be performed on clients with any contraindications listed until a physician’s approval is obtained.

Recent microdermabrasions, cosmetic surgeries, laser treatments, circulatory disorders, chemotherapy, autoimmune disorders, rosacea/VERY sensitive skin, acute acne vulgaris, skin disorders, lack of skin sensation, and pregnant women

57
Q

What is the MOST common waxing service transgender people will book?

A

Arm and leg waxes

58
Q

IMPORTANT ✍🏼

A

ONLY use vinyl or nitrile gloves (nonlatex). Latex gloves break down more easily and some clients may have a latex allergy

59
Q

What is the standard wax strip length?

A

3 x 9. Eyebrow and upper lip wax strips (facial wax strips) are 1 x 3.

60
Q

Petroleum Jelly is great for removing wax from…

A

Eyelashes and other hair

61
Q

IMPORTANT ✍🏼

A

DO NOT WAX over curved skin or 2 different planes in one application

62
Q

When should you exfoliate before a waxing service?

A

2-3 days prior (48-72 hours). DO NOT exfoliate the day before OR on the day of your appointment as it could cause irritation and ingrown hairs because wax exfoliates.
(Make sure your skin is moisturized and not dry for the service along with epilating ingrown hairs a week before to allow healing)

TIP: STOP shaving 2-3 weeks prior to wax service

63
Q

IMPORTANT ✍🏼

A

DO NOT wear tight-fitted clothing to wax service. Wear loose-fitted clothing to prevent friction and irritation post-wax

64
Q

FUN FACT

A

Waxing can be great for ingrown hairs as the wax takes off the epidermis skin barrier to allow the ingrown follicle to grow
