waves Flashcards
does the Electromagnetic spectrum need a medium to travel?
yes
what is Electromagnetic spectrum composed of
It is composed of all the electromagnetic waves
how are electromagnetic waves classified
They are classified according to their wavelength and frequency
what do waves carry
They carry energy but waves with shorter wavelengths can carry more energy
Radio waves
lowest frequency and the greatest length. There used in combination with a magnetic field in order to produce detailed 3D pictures of organs (MRI).
Microwaves
it is used to create heating in order to dry out human tissue mostly heart and cancer cells
Infrared Rays
they cannot be seen by the human eyes but can be felt as heat. Infrared radiation is used for thermal imaging in the medical field and for warming premature babies.
Visible light
made up of all wavelengths between 400 and 700 nanometers. All the colours that make up light can be found in that wavelength range. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an option to replace surgery to remove cancer cells.
Ultraviolet rays
they have a higher frequency than the colour purple and are emitted by the sun. the medical field uses this to sterilize rooms, equipment and medical instruments. Itβs also a medical treatment such as the treatment of certain skin conditions.
X-rays
short wavelength and very high frequency. Carry lots of energy and can go through muscle and skin but are absorbed by the bones. They can be used for medical imaging (x-rays).
Gamma rays
shortest waves but transmits the most energy. They can kill living cells. Using gamma rays you can kill cancerous cells.
what is a wave defined as
A wave is defined as a deformation that spreads through a vacuum or through a matter. The wave carries energy from one point to another, without transporting matter.
Tight wiggly line =
up in frequency, down in wavelength
Long wiggly line =
down in frequency, up in wavelength
Wavelength
It represents the distance between 2 crests or 2 troughs, or one complete cycle. Since it is the distance, it is measured using the metric system.
