biogeochemical cycles Flashcards
1
Q
what is biogeochemical cycles
A
set of reaction where an element passes from one environment to another in a infinite recycling loop.
2
Q
what are the cycles
A
carbon cycle
phosphorus cycle
Nitrogen cycle
3
Q
what are the main steps of the carbon cycle
A
- photosynthesis: plants capture CO2
- dead organisms and waste products: decomposes releasing CO2 and CH4
- Fossil fuels: buried under sediment for years.
- animal respiration: Carbon ingested returns to atmosphere as CO2
- Ocean uptake: CO2 dissolves in water
- Factory emissions: man made sources -not part of natural cycle.
