contamination of the atmosphere Flashcards
what are contaminants that result in acid rain
so2, Sulphur dioxide
nox, nitrogen dioxide and monoxide
what is acid rain and nox
3NO(g)+H2O(l)——2HNO3(aq)+NO(g)
NO(g)+1/2O2(g)——-NO2(g)
what is acid rain and SO2
SO2(g)+1/2O2(g)—SO3(g)
SO3(g)+H2O(l)–H2SO4(aq)
what are the consequences of acid rain
- Damage to plants
- damage to water resources
- chemical imbalance in the soil
- Erosion of city infrastructures
what is the ozone layer
- it is a part of the atmosphere with a high concentration of O3.
- Absorbs some of the uv rays from the sun
what are CFC
Chlorofluorocarbons.
- they are non flammable, non toxic in troposphere but drift into the stratosphere.
what is CFC’s impact
- they are broken up by uv rays and release chlorine into the atmosphere.
- atomic chlorine destroys the atmosphere.
where is the whole in the ozone layer and whats its current state
it is above antarctica and its showing signs of recovery.
what is smog
smoke+fog=smog
what is photochemical smog
chemical reactions taking place in the presence of sunlight- nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, tropospheric ozone.
Formation of tropospheric ozone
- when sunlight comes into contact with nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds they bake together and create ozone.
formation of smog
NO2(g)+SO2(g)+O3(g)=SMOG
