Water Quality Flashcards
Hard and Soft Water
Hard water- water that has a high amount of dissolved salts and minerals
Soft Water- Water that has a low amount of dissolved salts.
What determines water quality
Temp, sediments, total dissolved salts,
Rate of flow, turbidity, Toxic
substances,
oxygen content, pH, bacteria,
odour, phosphorus,
color, nitrogen, (Pg. 453)
Toxic Sustances
Substances that people add to the water that are not naturally there
Acid Rain
Rain with dissolved sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide in the atmosphere
This rain has a pH of under 5.6, with the lowest being 2.0
Sometimes this rain is more acidic than vinegar
pH scale
A scale that determines the acidity of a substance
What scientist look for in the tests
Results tell scientist what is in there and in what amount
Especially toxic chemicals and metals.
With this they can now address the water
Ppt -parts per trillion
