Tides Flashcards
What are tides
Different types
The rise and fall of the ocean, due to the moon and suns gravitational pull
- Neap Tides
-Spring Tides
The difference in the level between high and low tide is called tidal range
Neap tide
the smallest tidal movement
Occur when the sun and moon are perpendicular to each other
little difference in high and low tide
Suns gravitational pull works against the Moons
Spring Tide
The largest tidal movement
Occur when the Earth, Moon, and the Sun are in a line
High tide is really high, and low tide is really low.
Sun adds it’s gravitational pull
Tides movement on earth
As water increases on one side, it draws water from the other
Tides rise and fall about twice a day
The side that faces the moon is bulged, but also the opposite side is bulged

Shorlines and how they affect tidal range
The shape of the shoreline affects the tidal range
The more it is exposed to the ocean the less tidal range, the less it is exposed the greater the tidal range
