Food chain Flashcards
Overview of a food chain
All organisms are linked in a food chain. but not the same one
A food chain is a series of feeding relationships between organisms
Plants are always the basis of the food chain
Fishing
Fish are vital to the food chain
They are very abundant so this means they are a common prey
Therefore overfishing is extremely destructive.
Human tend to capture the fish with a high market price, so then the lesser priced fish increase in number.
Overfishing alters food chains, competition among species and the use of habitat.
Biomagnification
When a toxin enters a ecosystem it get absorbed by a plant. This plant get’s eaten and now that predator has the toxin its body. As each predator eats it prey the toxin accumulates in the organism. The toxin will magnifies until the apex predator has so much that it dies. This is called biomagnification
Sea floors and those organisms
Cracks on the sea floor that spew chemicals are called sea floor vents.
Organisms use this chemical to create oxygen and their own food.
The use of these chemicals to create food and oxygen is called chemosynthesis
