Ocean Flashcards
Ocean Salt
3.5% Salt,
Mostly Sodium Chloride,
Come from rocks, run off carries the salts to the ocean
16000 times greater than fresh water
Salinity
The amount of dissolved salts in water
Volcanoes underwater
Add sulphur into the water when they erupt
Ocean basins
Largest ecosystem on earth
Includes Abyssal Plains, trenches, and ridges
Ridge
A long undersea mountain range that runs in the middle of the oceans
Formed by diverging plates, magma spews out
Trench
Narrow, steep sided canyons
Formed when a light oceanic plate is pushed under a heavy continental plate
Abyssal Plains
Wide, flat open land
Formed by sediment deposits
Sediment is carried in underwater landslides, and spread out by currents
Continental Shelf
Area between the coast and edge of the ocean basin
Submerged part of the continent
Extends 300km out to sea
About 1 km deep
Continental Slope
The edge of the shelf, plunges 3 km down
