Aquatic plants Flashcards
Two types of aquatic plants
Floating
Attached
Within the first 180m
Require sun to photosynthesize
Attached plants
May be rooted at the bottom or at the edge
Shallow water plants have roots to anchor them in while deeper water mean they attach themselves(holdfast)
Some have long spongy stem to carry air in
Some have stomata on the top enabling the plants to get more air
Need oxygen, too much water is not good
Have a softer stem to flex in the currents and waves
Seaweeds
Marine plants
No roots, flowers or leaves
But the do photosynthesize
They are attached with a holdfast and obtain nutrients from the water they live in
Phytoplankton
Surface water are full of these creatures
They range in size from 0.002 to 2 mm
Much of earth depends on these tiny things
Produce tons and tons of oxygen
Adaptation include: Small light body, irregular shape and long spines, this reduces its time to sink
