Adaptation for Aquatic Life Flashcards
What are Gills
Gills are organs that enable the organisms that get oxygen from the water
Come in all shapes and sizes
Mammals adaptations to breath in water
Mammals have lungs, so they have to go up to the surface and grab a breath of air. These aquatic mammals have massive lungs and can dive for over 30 min
Adaptation for Moving Water
Some tuck into crannies
Some dig into the grounds
Some use special appendages or suction cup feet
( clam, star fish, fresh water snail)
Movement for large animals
Larger animals are streamlined and their tail and fins are flat and their body is tapered in the front to reduce water resistance
Movement for floating creatures
Other animals use buoyancy of water to help, they can skip or jump across the water( water strider)
Organisms that float around are called plankton, these organisms use special appendages to float and they just go with the flow
Organism and how the eat
Some organisms catch and eat their food, while other filter their food through the water. This includes the water flea, baleen whale and even barnacles
