Living In Water Flashcards
What is Diversity and Biodiversity
Variety of thing
Biodiversity- Diversity of life in a habitat
Lakes and Ponds
Lakes- body of fresh water in which sun light does not reach the bottom, temp is quite consistent although the bottom is a little colder, too deep to grow anywhere but the shoreline
Pond- Body of fresh water in which sun light does reach the bottom, temp is consistent throughout, Plants can root themselves
Lake and Ponds Creatures
Can include fish, insects, amphibians, beaver, muskrat, duck, and even turtles
Rivers and Streams
River- a large, fast moving body of freshwater
Clean or Murky
Stream- a smaller, slower moving body of freshwater
Usually include both pools and ripples
Small plants such a mosses and algae live here
River and Stream Creatures
Either good swimmers, or have to attach themselves.
Fish, caddisflies and stonefly ect, can live in this habitat
Oceans
Largest Aquatic habitat, are saltier and deeper than lakes.
Also have more movement due to tide, waves and currents.
Life in Oceans
More than 90% of life is in the first 180m.
This is because light can only penetrate this far down.
Plants can only grow up here, or root themselves but grow many meters up.
