Water & pH Flashcards
Polar molecule
A molecule in which the charges are unevenly distributed
Hydrogen Bond
Attraction between hydrogen atom and another atom; not as strong as covalent or ionic bonds
Solution
Type of mixture in which all components are evenly distributed (homogeneous)
Mixture
Two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined.
Solute
Part of a solution that is dissolved
Solvent
Part of a solution that does the dissolving
pH
Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution
Base
Any compound that forms OH- ions in a solution; more OH- ions, the stronger the base.
Adhesive
Molecules are attracted to molecules of different substances by hydrogen bonds
Cohesive
Molecules are attracted to other molecules of the same substance by hydrogen bonds
Suspension
MIxture of water and undissolved materials
Acid
Any compounds that forms H+ ions in a solution; more H+ ions, the stronger the acid
Capillary Action
When water rises in a narrow tube against the force of gravity as a result of adhesion
(One of the forces that draws water out of the roots of a plant and up into its stem and leaves!)
Buffer
Mixtures (usually weak acids or bases) that can react with acids or bases to keep the pH within a particular range.
Hydroxide ion
A negatively charged molecule made of one hydrogen atom to one oxygen atom
OH-
