Independent Variable
The variable that is purposely changed by the scientist in the experiment.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is observed or measured during the experiment.
Control Group
Exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for the independent variable.
Experimental Group
Group being tested or receiving a special treatment. Exposed to the independent variable.
Theory
An explanation of a natural event supported by observations and experiments.
Hypothesis
A testable explanation of a situation.
Conclusion
An explanation of the results.
Observation
Information gathered using one or more of your five senses.
Inference
A conclusion based on observation or evidence. A direct method of gathering information in an orderly way.
Ethical
A set of moral principles or values.
Valid/Validity
Makes logical sense and can be defended with evidence.
Results
Stating the data collected, and can sometimes include analyzing the data.
Tentative
Something that is planned but may be in set depending on the circumstances.
