Genetics Flashcards
Incomplete dominance
Case in which one allele is not completely dominant over another.
Intermediate
Codominance
Cases in which the phenotypes produced by both allese are clearly expressed
Polygenic traits
Traits controlled by two or more genes
EX: Hair color
Genotype
An organism’s allele pairs
Phenotype
Observable characteristic that is expressed as a result of an allele pair.
Genetics
Science of heredity
Recessive
The allele that is masked by the dominant allele
Heterozygous/hybrid
Organism with two different alleles for a specific trait
EX: Tt, Pp, Mm, Ee, Gg
Homozygous/purebred
Organism with two of the same alleles for a specific trait.
EX: MM. mm, GG, gg, TT, tt
Probability
How likely it is for something to occur.
Sex-linked traits
Traits carried by the X and Y chromosome.
What did Gregor Mendel study?
Pea plants
Law of segregation
Law stating that two alleles for each trait separate during meiosis.
Law of independent assortment
Law stating that a random distribution of alleles occurs during the formation of gametes.
Dominant
An allele that is always expressed - masks the presence of a recessive allele, represented by CAPITAL LETTERS
