Evolution Flashcards
Evolution
Hereditary changes in groups of living organisms over time.
Adaptation
Any heritable characteristic that increases an organisms ability to survive and reproduce.
Mimicry
Morphological adaptation in which one specieis evolves to resembles another species for protection or other advantages.
Ancestral traits
More primitive characteristic that appeared in common ancestors
Artificial selection
The process of directed breeding to produce offspring with desired traits.
Derived traits
New feature that had not appeared in common ancestors
Vestigial structure
Reduced form of a functional structure that indicates shared ancestry
Homologous structure
Anatomically similiar structure inherited from a common ancestor
Natural selection
Theory of evolution developed by Darwin, based on 4 ideas.
1. Excess Reproduction
2. Variations
3. Inheritance
4. Advantages of specific traits in an environment.
Camouflage
Morphological adaptations that allow organisms to blend into their surroundings.
Fitness
The ability of an individual to survive and reproduce
Overproduction
The number of organisms will increase exponentially from generation to generation if left unchecked.
Extinction
The dying out or extermination of a species
Transmission of aqquired traits
The idea by Lamark that an organism can pass on to its offspring physical characcteristcs the parent organism aqquired through use or disuse in its lifetime.
Competition
Organisms compete with each other for resources. Only the organisms who are more fit will survive
