water and carbon -hydrographs Flashcards
what does a hydrograph show?
.a graph that shows how a rivers discharge changes as a result of a period of heavy rainfall
what are the 5 labels on a hydrograph?
.peak rainfall
.lag time
.peak flow or discharge
.rising limb
.falling limb
what label is on the x axis?
.time in hours
what label is on the y axis?
.rainfall in mm
.discharge in cummecs
what is meant by lag time?
.the time between peak rainfall and peak discharge
how do you know if a hydrograph is flashy?
.a flashy hydrograph is shorter (has a shorter lag time) because water reaches the river quicker
how do you know if a hydrograph is subdued?
.longer hydrograph (longer lag time) because it takes longer for water to reach the river
what factors affect a flashy or subdued hydrograph?
.geology
.presence of vegetation
.steepness of hill
how does geology affect a flashy or subdued hydrograph?
saturated ground will result in a flashy hydrograph because water is traveling as overland flow and reaching the river quicker
how does the presence of vegetation affect a flashy or subdued hydrograph?
presence of vegetation -lack of vegetation will result in a flashy hydrograph precipitation isn’t being intercepted nor stored in vegetation therefore water travels as surface runoff so water is reaching the river quicker
how does the steepness of a hill affect a flashy or subdued hydrograph?
.a steep hill will result in a flashy hydrograph because naturally precipitation will travel downstream via overland flow therefore it reaches the river quicker, resulting in a short lag time
