Water Flashcards
what does polar mean?
regions of negative and positive charges
is water polar or non-polar?
polar
which molecule in water is delta negative?
oxygen
which molecule in water is delta positive?
hydrogen
what are hydrogen bonds?
weak interactions which break and reform, constantly moving the molecules
name 3 properties of water
1 - high boiling point
2 - water becomes less dense when its ice ]
3 - has cohesive properties
give 3 reasons as to why water is important for life
1 - efficient transport medium
2 - acts as a coolant
3 - water is stable
why does water have a high boiling point?
it takes a lot of energy to break the bonds
why does water become less dense when it is ice?
the hydrogen bonds become slightly further apart
why does water have cohesive properties?
it moves as one mass and is adhesive (attracted to other molecules)
what bonds are formed between water molecules?
hydrogen
