Structure of proteins Flashcards
what bond is formed between amino acids?
peptide
name 3 groups within proteins
AMINE GROUP (1 nitrogen, 2 hydrogen), CARBOXYL GROUP (1 carbon, 1 oxygen and 1 OH), R GROUP
what is the primary structure of proteins?
the sequence/chain of amino acids
what is the secondary structure of proteins?
atoms within the structure interact, hydrogen bonds may form pulling it into a alpha helices or the chain chan lie antiparallel in a beta plated sheet
what is the tertiary structure of proteins?
there are interactions within the R group forming hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds or disulphide bridges (closer together)
what is the quaternary structure of proteins?
2 or more subunit interacting
how are proteins identified?
using a biuret test (the peptide bonds form violet coloured complexes with copper ions in the alkaline solution
what is the monomer of proteins?
amino acids
