WARNING SYSTEMS Flashcards

1
Q

When does the MASTER CAUTION light illuminate?

A

When a caution occurs outside the normal field of vision of the Flight Crew, the respective System Annunciator light(s) and the two MASTER CAUTION lights illuminate.

Q

How do Master Caution System alerts differ between single/simple and dual-channel faults?

A

A single fault in certain redundant systems, also known as a “simple fault,” does not illuminate the System Annunciator and MASTER CAUTION lights. However, this type of fault is stored in the Master Caution System. Pushing the system annunciator recalls the simple fault on the System Annunciator panel.

Q

What is the lowest elevation, relative to the aircraft, that red indicates on the terrain display?

Q

The FLAP INHIBIT switch is used to inhibit which GPWS callout(s)?

A

FLAP INHIBIT: prevents TOO LOW FLAPS aural alert, regardless of flap position.

Q

When is the “500” RA callout provided?

A

• an approach other then ILS or GLS is used, or

• a valid localizer frequency is tuned and:

  • the flight path is not within ±2 dots of a localizer beam, or
  • the flight path is not within ±2 dots of a glideslope beam, or
  • a backcourse approach is detected

Q

What is the reactive windshear alert provided by the GPWS?

A

Windshear aural warnings are heard through the speakers and headsets at preset volumes, and are accompanied by WINDSHEAR on the attitude indicators.

Q

How is the radar selected on?

A

Selecting WXR on the EFIS control panel activates the weather radar on the associated ND.

Q

What is provided when WX+T is selected on the Radar control panel?

A

WX+T: displays weather radar returns and turbulence (manual mode) or weather radar returns and threats (auto mode); turbulence is displayed out to 40 nm for all selected ranges.

Q

What type of windshear warning(s) does the weather radar provide?

A

PREDICTIVE WINDSHEAR AURAL AND VISUAL ALERTS:

“Windshear Ahead” - Enabled during takeoff, below 1200 ft RA - Windshear closely ahead.
“Go Around, Windshear Ahead” - Enabled during approach, below 1200 ft RA - Windshear w/i 1.5 miles
“Monitor Radar Display” - Enabled during approach, below 1200 ft RA - Windshear w/i 3 miles

13
Q

Is radar turbulence detection capable of detecting clear air turbulence?

A

NO, Flight Crews must continue to rely on traditional windshear avoidance methods as the weather radar is not capable of supplying predictive windshear in clear air.

14
Q

How long after activation does the PWS take until cautions or warnings can be provided?

A

Alerts are available approximately 12 seconds after the weather radar begins scanning for windshear.

15
Q

How is the Predictive Windshear System (PWS) activated?

A

Automatically when:

• thrust levers are set for takeoff, even if respective engine is off or IRS not aligned, or
• in flight below 2300 ft RA (predictive windshear alerts are issued below 1200 ft RA)

Manually by pushing the EFIS control panel WXR switch to activate the radar.

16
Q

What is the aural alert for a PWS Caution?

A

“MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY”

17
Q

How is the Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS) activated?

A

RAAS operates without any actions required by the Flight Crew.

18
Q

How are Resolution Advisories (RAs) displayed on the PFD?

A

TCAS pitch commands on the PFD consist of red lines on the PFD indicating pitch regions to avoid in order to resolve the traffic conflict.

19
Q

What is the indication of a Traffic Advisory (TA)?

A

Amber circle (TA), Altitude and vertical motion are included with the TA symbol if the other aircraft is using Transponder Mode S or C. TAs are indicated by the aural “TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC,” which sounds once and is then reset until the next TA occurs.

20
Q

What is the difference between the amber MAINT light on the aft overhead panel and the magenta MAINT box on the MDS SYS page?

A

The illumination of the amber MAINT light on the aft overhead panel indicates that a system fault exists that must be reviewed by Maintenance.

This light is not to be confused with the magenta MAINT menu tab located on the MFD Systems (SYS) page.
