AUTOMATIC FLIGHT Flashcards

1
Q

From left to right, what are the three Flight Mode Annunciator (FMA) categories?

Q

How is control wheel steering indicated?

A

Pushing a CWS engage switch engages the A/P pitch and roll axis in the CWS mode and displays CWS P and CWS R on the FMAs.

Q

When do the flight directors operate independently?

A

With both F/D switches ON, during manual flight, and:

• TO/GA mode engaged and below 400 ft RA, or

• APP mode engaged with LOC and G/S captured.

Q

Except for when APP modes (LOC/GS) are active, how many autopilots may be engaged at once?

A

Only one A/P can be engaged at a given time unless the approach (APP) mode is engaged.

Q

What would cause the A/P to disengage?

A

• Pushing either A/P disengage switch
• Column or wheel force override
• Pushing either TO/GA switch with a single A/P engaged in CWS or CMD below 2000 ft RA
• Pushing either TO/GA switch with a single A/P engaged in CWS or CMD at and above 2000 ft RA with flaps not up or G/S engaged
• One second after activation of stick shaker if A/P is engaged in ALT HOLD, VNAV PTH (in a level segment), VNAV PTH (Flaps 15 or greater), V/S (Flaps 15 or greater), or G/S (single channel only) modes
• Five minutes after continuous activation of stick shaker if not in any of the above modes
• Five minutes after continuous stick shaker activation if the A/P was re-engaged
• Pushing either TO/GA switch after touchdown with both A/Ps engaged in CMD
• Pushing an illuminated A/P CMD switch
• Pushing the A/P DISENGAGE bar down
• Activating either pilot’s control wheel trim switch
• Moving either STAB TRIM PRI or the STAB TRIM B/U cutout switch to the CUTOUT position
• Either left or right IRS system failure or FAULT light illuminated
• Loss of electrical power or a sensor input which prevents proper operation of the engaged A/P and mode
• Loss of respective hydraulic system pressure

Q

When will the STAB OUT OF TRIM light illuminate?

A

When illuminated, the A/P is not trimming the stabilizer properly.

The STAB OUT OF TRIM light will also illuminate for a partial failure of an FCC. Should a failure occur in flight, the light will illuminate on the ground after landing when ground speed is less than 30 kts.

Q

What does a flashing amber A/T alert light indicate?

A

The lights will flash:

• amber, indicating an A/T airspeed error where airspeed differs from commanded value by +10 or -5 kts and is not approaching commanded value in flight with flaps not fully retracted.

9
Q

Which system provides the N1 limit for the A/T?

A

The FMC provides the A/T system with N1 limit values.

Should the FMC not provide N1 limits to the A/T system, a boxed white A/T LIM annunciation replaces the thrust mode and the EECs provide a degraded thrust limit.

Q

When is an altitude deviation alert provided?

A

When deviating by 200 ft from the selected altitude:

• a momentary tone sounds, and

• the current altitude box turns amber and begins to flash.

Q

What does THR HLD on the FMA indicate?

A

When THR HOLD is engaged, power is removed from the A/T servo motors. This prevents thrust levers from moving during the takeoff roll and initial climb out.

Both a software function and hardware function remove power from the servo motors. Only when both functions have removed power to the servo motors will the A/T mode display THR HLD on the FMA.

Q

After TO/GA is selected on a two-engine go around, the FD will command an initial pitch attitude of approximately how many degrees?

16
Q

On a go-around with the autothrottle armed, after the first push of either TO/GA switch, the thrust levers advance to reduced go-around N1 to produce what rate of climb?

A

Thrust advances toward the reduced go-around N1 to produce 1000 to 2000 fpm rate of climb.

17
Q

On a single-engine go-around, a push of either TO/GA switch will command an initial pitch attitude of how many degrees nose up?

A

F/D pitch commands 13° nose up.

18
Q

What occurs in minimum speed reversion?

A

Minimum speed, FMC speed, or selected speed, whichever is higher, becomes the AFS commanded speed.

If actual speed becomes equal to or slightly less than the minimum speed, the underspeed limiting symbol appears in the MCP IAS/MACH display,

The AFS commands a speed 5 kts greater than minimum speed. Reaching a speed 5 kts greater than minimum speed reactivates normal MCP speed selection control.
