VTE

To prevent arterial embolism from mechanical heart valves

How do they work?
A
It inhibits vitamin K epoxide reductase reducing production of vitamin K dependent clotting factors

What are the side effects of this drug?
A
Bleeding

What drug reverses the effect of bleeding?
A
phytomenadione (vitamin K1)

What are the warnings for this drug?
A
Active bleeding
Liver disease
Pregnancy first trimester

What drugs interact with warfarin?
A
CYP inducers, phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampicin) increase warfarin metabolism and risk of clots.
CYP inhibitors (e.g. fluconazole, macrolides) decrease warfarin metabolism and increase bleeding risk
