Adenosine Flashcards
What is it used for?
Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) without life threatening features.
How does it work?
It works by binding to adenosine receptors on cell surfaces. Thereby slowing sinus rate.
What are the contraindications for the drug?
Hypotension
Coronary ischaemia
Decompensated heart failure
Asthma
COPD
Heart transplant patients
What are the cautions of this drug?
AF
Atrial flutter
Recent MI
What are the side effects of this med?
It can induce bradycardia
Breathlessness
hypotension (discontinue if severe)
Chest pain (discontinue)
What other agents does it interact with?
Dipyridamole- antiplatelet blocks cellular uptake of adenosine. Prolonging its effect therefore adenosine dose should be halved.
Theophylline and aminophylline are competitive antagonist of adenosine receptors and reduce its effect
What are the monitoring requirements of adenosine?
It needs to be closely monitored and this must include a continuous cardiac rhythm strip, recorded for subsequent inspection.
Can it be used in pregnancy?
Large doses may produce fetal toxicity; manufacturer advises use only if potential benefit outweighs risk.
