What is it indicated for?
Hypertension
Oedema
What is the mechanism of action?
They inhibit the Na+/Cl− co-transporter in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron.
Preventing sodium reabsorption and its osmotically associated water
What are the side effects of these drugs?
Hyponatraemia
Hypokalaemia- causing cardiac arrhythmias
Impotence in men
May increase plasma concentrations of glucose, LDL and triglycerides
What are the warnings of this drug class?
Hyponatraemia
Hypokalaemia
Gout- as they reduce uric acid excretion precipitating an acute attack
What drugs do they interact with?
NSAIDs (not low dose aspirin though)- reduced effectiveness of diuretic
Drugs that lower potassium concentration
