WAN technology Flashcards
whats frame relay?
-packet switched technology which allows multiple systems to communicate on the same structure without any direct communication
-can monitor the amount of traffic on the system and if the system gets too busy it can be configured not to overload
-This feature of reconstructing is useful for telecommunications and video traffic
whats packet switching?
- where different packets of the same message may take different routes
whats ISDN?
-integrated switched digital network
-circuit switched technology
- has the capacity to have a separate channel for data and voice
-has two levels of service;
BRI- basic rate interface, for small businesses or home users.
PRI- primary rate interface, for medium to large companies
interface specs- BRI
- can have two “B” channels
-for 64bps (voice or data) - one “D” channel of 64bps
-allow up to 30 voice lines or data lines
-or one data line of 1.9mbps capacity
ATM
- asynchronous transfer mode
- very similar to frame relay
- main difference is the size of the packets sent
- ATM the packets are called cells and are smaller than frame relay
-means that it has better speed and reliability
