What are the diff types of network?
LAN, WAN, PAN and VAN
What is a LAN?
- local area network
-It covers a small geographic area and is owned by the organisation.
-It can span many sites within a town or city.
-can be as small as 2 computers connected with one cable - Switches and routers can be used to extend a LAN
- can be divided into separate sub-networks to ensure a greater level of control
Whats a WAN?
-wide area network
-covers a large geographic area and is owned by the telecommunications company
-For example, school and colleges LANS are connected via a WAN provided by the local education authority.
-The internet is also classed as a WAN.
Whats a PAN?
-personal area network
-organised around an individual person and is set up for personal use.
-These typically connect PC, phone, tablet, printer etc
-These can be wireless or constructed with cables.
whats a VAN?
-value added networks.
-customer leases communication lines, bandwidth, data rate or time from a service provider
-user will also have access to additional specialist services
-such as commercial databases and video conferencing
