LAN technology Flashcards
network protocols and standards
- range of protocols that can be used on a specific type of network is known as a protocol suite
- common protocol suite is the TCP/IP suite that is used on the internet and LANS
The main protocols of the TCP/IP suite are?
TCP/IP
AppleTalk
UDP (user datagram protocol)
what do the main TCP/IP suite protocols do?
TCP/IP - for LANS and the internet
AppleTalk- older protocol suite that has been superseded by the TCP/IP suite
UDP- used for connectionless systems that transfer data. apart of the TCP/IP suite, connectionless system where packets of data are not acknowledged.
Range of standards are associated with diff network types;
802.2, 802.3, 802.5, 802.11, FDDI
802.2 standard explain
- specifies multiplexing and flow control that takes place at layer 2 of OSI model
802.3 standard explain
- specifies physical layer (1) of wired ethernet LANS
802.5 standard explain
- supports token ring networks
802.11 standard explain
- supports wireless LANS
FDDI standard explain
- standard for data transmission on the fibre optic LANS
application layer protocols;
DNS, HTTP, FTP
explain DNS
- domain name server
- resolves a name to an IP address
explain HTTP
- protocol used for retrieving linked resources on the internet (PAN)
explain FTP
- file transfer protocol
- used to transfer files over a TCP network (PAN)
