Wait, what? (Anesthetics) Flashcards
If a drug has low solubility in blood, what is the effect on induction and recovery times?
Low solubility in blood –> rapid induction & recovery times
What type of drugs affect the CNS?
Lipid soluble (able to cross BBB)
OR
Actively transported drugs
Thiopental
Barbiturate w/ high potency, high lipid solubility, & rapid entry into brain. Decreases cerebral blood flow.
Used for induction of anesthesia & short surgical procedures
Effect terminated by rapid redistribution into tissue & fat
Midazolam
Benzodiazepine used for endoscopy
Used w/ gaseous anethetics & narcotics
May cause severe postoperative respiratory depression, decreased BP, & amnesia
Treat O/D w/ flumazenil
Arylcyclohexylamine
Ketamine- PCP analog that acts as dissociate anesthetic
Block NDMA receptors
Cardiovascular stimulant. Increases blood flow.
Causes disorientation hallucination, & bad dreams.
Propofol
Used for rapid anesthesia induction & short procedures. Less postoperative nausea than thiopental.
Potentiates GABA.
Dantrolene
Prevents release of calcium from sarcoplasmic reticulum of skeletal muscle
Used to treat malignant hyperthermia caused by inhalation anesthetics & succinylcholine. Also treats neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
