W2L1 - Life Flashcards
In biochemical reaction what medium is the most relevant
Water
Explain hydrogen bonds in water
Oxygen more electronegative → polar molecule → charge of molecule not evenly distributed → hydrogen bonds form between portions of different molecules with opposite charges
What is adhesion
Water molecules are attracted polar surfaces e.g glass like v like
Explain how a concave meniscus forms as a result of adhesion
the negative O- of water adheres/sticks (adhesive forces) to the positively charged glass and that force is stronger than the cohesive forces between water
What is cohesion?
tendency for molecules to stick together due to do same IMF
How do cohesive forces work in transpiration
when water leaves the plants through transpiration at the leaves, the IMF of water pulls together towards the top
What is water tension
strong hydrogen bonding in water allows small weights to float on water
How does water work as a solvent in salt
Na+ attracted to negative O- in H2O → Cl- attracted to H+ → form hydration shells around each ion
