What does Lateral mean?
To the side
What does Medial mean?
To the middle
What does Anterior (ventral) mean
To the front
What does Posterior (dorsal) mean?
To the back
What does Inferior mean?
Below
What does Superior mean?
Above
What does Proximal mean?
Close to
What does Distal mean?
Away from
What is a Flexion and Extension?
Flexion – a movement that decreases the angle
between two parts
Extension – An increase in the angle
What is an Abduction or Adduction
Away and Towards the midline (think, to abduct someone is to take them away)
What are lateral and medial rotations?
- Rotation of the Humerus (upper arm)
- Lateral = towards the back: Subscapularis
- Medial = towards the chest: Pectoralis major
What is the standard anatomical position?
Head facing front
Elbows facing back
Arms straight and hanging at sides
Palms out, fingers partly splayed
Legs almost together
Feet facing front
What are the Anatomical planes?
Transverse/Axial
Coronal/Frontal
Sagittal
