W1 lab glassware Flashcards
accuracy of glassware
This refers to limits of error or the nearness to the true value ex: limit of error of a 5ml volumetric pipette is 0.005ml the pipette would deliver a volume between 4.995 and 5.005
precision
how accurate the pipette is
reproducibility
How many times the pipette can produce the same results
temperature
temp that glassware was calibrated ad is supposed to be used at. its usually 20 liquids must reach room temp before being meassured because they expand and contract
high temp liquids take up more space
low temp liquids take up less space
tc
to contain
calibrated to hold the stated volume
when liquid drained, less than the stated volume will be delivered
td
to deliver
when liquid is drained from container the exact volume will be delivered
meniscus
surface tension causes a curve, read bottom of curve at eye level
volumetric flask
preparation of accurate solutions, calibrated 20 and tc
cylinders
less accurate then volumetric flask prepare solution that do not require a degree of high accuracy
containers
not calibrated to deliver exact volumes
beakers-hold reagents or water
erlenmeyer flask- containers used during prep
test tube-glass plastic plain centrifuge or reusable
reagent bottle- glass plastic clear or amber
volumetric pipette
calibrated td a single volume
used to make accurate measurements of aqueous fluids such a s controls or standards
