audience demographic - who is vogues TA? how does vogue define their audience?
affluent, fashion and style conscious females aged 30-25
vogue’s media pack defines their audience as: stylish, influential, luxury consumer’s in their mid-30s
why is the audience mainly abc1/women?
ABC1 audiences are deduced by expensive nature of fashion and products featured within the magazine itself
Mostly females (80%) read the magazine – the publication is focused on women
why may a male audience be interested?
men (20%) could read due to interview with celebrities of interest or they could possibly work within the fashion industry / or have aspirations of doing so
audience psychographics - who would enjoy vogue?
audiences whose opinion may parallel the traditional ideologies surrounding gender (in relation to domesticity, motherhood, fashion and beauty for example) and perpetuate many narrow and stereotypical ideals of feminine beauty
audience psychographics - who of young and rubicans 4 cs would like vogue?
- Succeeders (demonstrated by the sheer amount of luxurious content throughout and its high value = disposable income)
- Aspirers (demonstrated by the ambitious expensive fashion shoots in exotic locations) due to their ambitious lifestyle and fashion choices mirrored by the editorial content of the magazine
- Explorers (evidenced by the impressive advertising of new cosmetics products and articles instructing young women how to better manage their bank accounts)
who are the secondary audience?
the reader’s who haven’t quite qualified for the professional status or funding to fully immerse themselves in the lifestyles represented within the magazine itself, but whom aspire to one day be able to
vogue represents their gateway to another world they want to become part of (wish fulfilment)
who are intermittent readers?
not regular consumers but they might find themselves ‘dipping into’ certain issues
lifestyles may be too busy or they may find the magazine too expensive for regular subscriptions
may only read it if a particular fashion designer or celebrity is featured
who else may producers target?
Fashion Industry Employees - reading the magazine for hints, reviews, previews and just to keep their finger ‘on the pulse’ of the latest fashions
Readers of Similar Magazines - Readers of Elle, Cosmopolitan, Grazia, etc. may be tempted to ‘graduate’ to Vogue as it is often seen as the most elite fashion magazine of its kind
gerbner cultivation theory -
- women’s mags tend to be readd on a regular basis so they would lend themselves to gerbners theory
- with over 100 years of publication history behind it, vogue has influenced a generation of young, aspirational women
- has also reflected the zeitgeist of its time and the changing attitudes towards women in society (mostly Western) in general, over the period of its publication
- it has naturalized a series of feminine identities into the very fiber of the readers consciousness
